For shops selling to EU customers · updated 26 October 2026
Selling to the EU? The European Accessibility Act applies to your shop.
Since 28 June 2025, online shops that sell to consumers in the EU must be accessible, wherever the business is based. The fixes are the same as for US accessibility lawsuits (WCAG). On top of that, EU authorities expect a statement explaining how your shop meets the rules, and a way for people to report problems.

We read the page the way a search engine does. Nothing is changed on your site, and we don't keep the results.
Who it applies to, and what's happened so far
- Who: online shops and other consumer services sold to people in the EU, including businesses outside the EU. Small service businesses with fewer than 10 staff and €2 million or less in yearly turnover are exempt.
- Germany: the market regulator opened proceedings against online shops over checkout flows, and the first reported fine, in early 2026, was in the high five figures for a mid-sized fashion shop.
- France: first formal notices in early 2026, with proposed penalties of €15,000 to €60,000.
- Maximum fines range from €32,000 (Estonia) and €100,000 (Germany) to €1 million (Spain) and 5% of turnover (Italy).
- Shops that had an accessibility statement and a feedback channel, and could show their fixes, were reportedly given a deadline to correct problems rather than a fine.

Questions
We're not in the EU. Does it still apply?
Yes, if you sell to consumers in the EU. It's about where your customers are, not where your business is.
Who writes the statement in German or French?
We draft it, and we tell you it was drafted with AI and checked by us. Have a native speaker you trust read it before publishing.
Does this make my shop compliant?
We don't claim that. We fix what we find, write a statement that's true for your site, and give you a dated record. Some parts, like a platform's checkout, are outside our reach, and the statement says so.
Who does the work?
DisputeKit, run by Shubhankar Sharma in India. We use automated tools and AI to work faster, and every finding and fix is checked before you see it. We're not lawyers and don't give legal advice; your lawyer decides what the law requires for your business.
