How to dispute a charge on Venmo

Where you dispute depends on how you paid: a Venmo payment, the Venmo Debit Card, or the Venmo Credit Card. And for purchases, whether the payment was marked as goods and services matters a lot.

1. A Venmo payment: dispute it in the app

  1. Go to the Me tab and tap the transaction.
  2. Tap Need Help? and choose the statement that fits best. You can add other transactions.
  3. Tap Next, add the details, then Submit Issue. Reset your password if asked.

Answer every question in full and attach proof: the listing, your messages, tracking or photos.

2. The time limits

  • Item not received or significantly not as described: open the dispute within 180 days of sending the payment. This is Venmo's Purchase Protection, and it covers goods and services payments to eligible sellers.
  • Other errors on your statement: within 60 days after Venmo provides the statement.
  • A payment you didn't make: tell Venmo straight away. The sooner you report, the less you can lose.

3. Paid as "friends and family"?

Personal payments aren't covered by Purchase Protection. If you paid a stranger for an item as a personal payment and it never came, Venmo usually can't reverse it. Still report it in the app and at reportfraud.ftc.gov. In future, pay sellers with goods and services, or by card through a platform that protects buyers.

4. Venmo Debit Card or Credit Card

  • Venmo Debit Card and online purchases can't be disputed in the app. Contact Venmo support: Me → Settings → Get Help → Chat With Us, and ask for an agent.
  • Venmo Credit Card disputes go to the card's issuer, Synchrony Bank.
  • If a payment came partly from your bank and partly from your Venmo balance, dispute the Venmo-balance part with Venmo.
