How to dispute a charge on Cash App
Can you chargeback on Cash App? For a Cash App Card purchase, yes: you dispute it in the app. For money you sent to another person, usually no. If the payment was funded by a bank card linked to Cash App, the bank behind that card may help. Here is each case.
1. A Cash App Card purchase
This works much like any debit card dispute. First ask the merchant for a refund, and keep a copy of what you sent. If that fails:
- Open the Activity tab and tap the transaction.
- Tap the … menu, choose Need help, then Dispute this transaction, and follow the prompts.
- Say plainly what went wrong (not received, not as described, charged twice, wrong amount, or not you) and attach your order confirmation and messages.
Only completed transactions can be disputed. A pending one may still be cancellable.
2. A payment you sent to a person
If you sent the money yourself, even to a scammer, it's usually treated as authorised and generally can't be disputed. Cash App says it can't guarantee refunds for scams. Still report it in the app and to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. If someone else got into your account and sent it, that's unauthorised: report it straight away (see section 4).
3. Paid with a linked bank card
If the payment was funded by a debit or credit card linked to Cash App, you can also dispute it with that card's bank. Be aware that a bank dispute against Cash App can lead Cash App to restrict your account, so try the in-app route first unless it's fraud.
4. Unauthorised charges: act fast
For a debit card or account, US law (Regulation E) limits what you can lose if you report quickly. Tell Cash App within 2 business days of learning about it and your loss is capped at $50. Report within 60 days of the statement showing the charge and the cap is $500. After that, you could lose more. Change your PIN and password, and lock your card in the app, first.
What to keep
- Screenshots of the transaction and the merchant's listing or checkout page.
- Your messages asking the merchant for a refund, with dates.
- Tracking or proof of non-delivery, or photos of what arrived.
