Why is PayPal holding my money?

A PayPal hold means the payment has arrived but you can't use it yet. It's usually temporary, and PayPal tells you the reason in an email titled "An important message about your PayPal balance" or on your Account Overview.

The usual reasons

  • You're a new seller, or haven't sold for a long time.
  • Your selling changed suddenly: a sales spike, new prices, a new platform or a new kind of item.
  • Customers complained: several refunds, disputes or chargebacks.
  • Higher-risk items: tickets, gift cards, consumer electronics, computers and travel packages.
  • Verification isn't finished: identity checks or a video KYC call still pending.

How long it lasts

PayPal says held funds are usually held for up to 21 days, and that you can shorten that. A reserve is different: PayPal keeps a share of your sales for longer to cover future refunds or chargebacks.

How to release it sooner

  1. Add tracking from an approved carrier. PayPal says it releases the hold about 24 hours after the carrier confirms delivery.
  2. Or print the label through PayPal, which tracks it for you, with the same release about 24 hours after delivery.
  3. For services or digital items, mark the order as Completed. PayPal says it releases the money 7 days later.
  4. To do either: open the payment in Activity, click Get your money, choose product or service, and submit.

Avoid the next hold

  • Describe items accurately and state shipping times and returns clearly.
  • Ship fast and upload tracking every time.
  • Answer buyers quickly and settle problems before they become disputes. PayPal suggests keeping complaints below 1% of sales.

Held for longer than that, or the account is limited?

If the money is still held after delivery, or PayPal has limited your account or set a reserve, put your case in writing. Our free tool writes a release request letter with the right evidence: get my money released.

Buying, not selling? A payment you sent can't be "held" against you, but you can dispute it: PayPal item not received. Fighting a chargeback? PayPal chargebacks vs disputes.
