# Stripe closed my account: what happens to my money?

When Stripe closes or restricts an account, it usually stops new payments straight away but doesn't pay out the whole balance at once. Part of it is often held back to cover refunds and chargebacks that can still arrive for months.

## Why Stripe locks or closes accounts

- **Too many disputes** or refunds compared with your sales.
- **A restricted or prohibited business** under Stripe's restricted businesses list, or one that wasn't disclosed.
- **A sudden jump in volume** or a change in what you sell.
- **Verification problems:** identity or business details that don't match.
- **Suspected fraud** flagged by Stripe's risk systems.

Check your email and the Stripe Dashboard for the stated reason. If it's verification, supplying the missing details can reverse it.

## Why your balance is held

Cardholders can dispute a payment long after it was made, often up to 120 days or more depending on the reason. [Chargeback time limits](https://disputekits.com/chargeback-time-limits). Stripe is liable if you can't pay those back, so it may keep a reserve after closing. One legal guide reports termination reserves of roughly 90 to 180 days, and longer where Stripe sees high risk. The exact terms are in the agreement that applied to your account.

## What to do now

- **Download your data:** payments, customers and payouts, before access is limited further.
- **Ask Stripe in writing** for the reason, the amount held, and the date it will be released.
- **Reduce the risk they're holding against.** Ship outstanding orders, answer every open dispute, and refund customers who ask before they file a chargeback.
- **Move to another processor** so you can keep trading. Be honest in its application.
- **If the release date passes** or no date is given, send a formal release request and use the complaint routes for your country.

Closing your own account? Stripe's help centre says an account can't be closed with a balance: pay it out first, and scheduled payouts still go ahead. PayPal holding money instead? [Why PayPal holds money](https://disputekits.com/paypal-holding-my-money).
