# Find the code your removed apps left behind.

Uninstalling a Shopify app doesn't always remove what it added to your theme. Old scripts and snippets keep loading on every page, slow your store down, and sometimes break things. This free check lists every app whose code loads on your store, shows which code stays after uninstalling, and gives you a safe cleanup list.

- Read-only: we never touch your theme
- Tells apart code Shopify removes by itself from code that stays behind
- Finds "Liquid error: Could not find asset snippets/…" left by deleted apps
- Step-by-step cleanup on a copy of your theme

## Check my store

Your store's address

We read your home page and one product page. Nothing is changed, and we don't keep the results.

## Why app code stays behind

Apps add code to a store in three ways, and only two of them clean up after themselves:

| How the app added it | After you uninstall |
| --- | --- |
| App embed or app block (theme app extension) | Shopify removes it by itself |
| Script tag registered by the app | Shopify removes it by itself |
| Code pasted into your theme files (snippets, `theme.liquid`, assets), by the app or by its support team | **Stays** until someone deletes it |

Older apps and many page builders, review widgets, currency converters and pop-ups used the third way. If you've tried several apps over the years, your theme probably still loads some of them.

## How to remove leftover code safely

- In Shopify admin, go to **Online Store → Themes**. On your live theme, click **…** then ** Duplicate**. Work only on the copy.
- On the copy, click **…** then ** Edit code**.
- Use the search box above the file list (or open `layout/theme.liquid` and search inside it) for the app's name or the file name from your results.
- Delete only lines that load that app, such as `{% render 'app-name' %}`, `{% include 'app-name' %}` or a `` tag. For a "Could not find asset" error, delete the render or include line that names the missing snippet.
- Click **Preview** on the copy. Check the home page, a product page, the cart and checkout.
- When everything works, **Publish** the copy. Keep the old theme for a few weeks in case you need to undo.

Not sure what a line does? Leave it, or email [hello@disputekits.com](mailto:hello@disputekits.com?subject=Leftover%20app%20code) with your results and we'll tell you what's safe to remove.

## Questions

### Will this change my theme?

No. It reads your public pages the way a browser does. It can't log in to your store and never edits anything.

### Can it see every leftover file?

No. It sees code that loads on your home page and one product page. A snippet that's still in your theme files but never rendered doesn't slow your store, and this check can't see it. Code that loads only on other pages (cart, collections, blog) also needs checking there: enter that page's address to scan it.

### Is everything it lists a leftover?

No. Many apps you still use load from your theme code on purpose. Tick the apps you still use and the check builds a list of the rest.

### Am I still being charged for an app I removed?

Shopify stops an app's recurring charge when you uninstall it. Leftover code doesn't bill you, but if you still see a charge, check **Settings → Billing** in Shopify and contact the app's developer or Shopify support.

### Is this connected to Shopify?

No. DisputeKit is independent and isn't affiliated with Shopify. Run by Shubhankar Sharma; see [contact](https://disputekits.com/contact).
