# How do I dispute a Zelle transaction?

Call or message **your own bank or credit union**, not Zelle. Zelle payments to an enrolled person can't be cancelled or reversed, but your bank must investigate fraud, and some scams are reimbursed. What you get back depends on whether you sent the money yourself.

**Want the answer for your own case?** Use the tool, then read on for the details.

## Which case are you in?

| What happened | Can you get it back? |
| --- | --- |
| Recipient hasn't enrolled with Zelle yet | **Cancel it yourself**: open your Zelle activity in your bank's app, pick the payment and cancel. |
| Someone else got into your account and sent the money | **Yes, usually.** That's an unauthorized transfer under federal rules (Regulation E). Report it to your bank at once. |
| You were tricked by someone pretending to be your bank, a government agency or Zelle | **Maybe.** Zelle says qualifying impostor scams may be eligible for reimbursement. Report it to your bank. |
| You paid a seller who never delivered, or sent money to the wrong person | **Usually not.** Zelle has no purchase protection. Ask the recipient to send it back, and report scams. |

## Steps

- **Contact your bank** using the number on your card or in its app (not a number from a text or email). Say whether the payment was unauthorized or a scam.
- **Report within 60 days** of the statement that shows the transfer. Regulation E says you must, to avoid liability for later unauthorized transfers. Sooner is better.
- **Write down** the date, amount, recipient's name, phone or email, and every message with them.
- **Report the scam** to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- **Watch for "recovery" scams**: anyone who calls offering to get your Zelle money back for a fee is almost certainly another scam.

## Paying for something? Use a card

A credit card gives you chargeback and Fair Credit Billing Act rights that Zelle doesn't. If you paid by card instead, our tool shows your deadline and writes the dispute letter.
