## Before you file

- **Ask the merchant first**, in writing. Wells Fargo says the merchant's terms can affect your dispute, so a refusal or no reply helps your case. [How to ask for a refund](https://disputekits.com/how-to-ask-for-a-refund).
- **Gather proof**: receipt, order page, tracking, photos, cancellation confirmation and your messages with the seller.
- **Write it plainly**: what you bought, what went wrong, what you asked the merchant for, and the amount you want back.

## Zelle is different

Wells Fargo says that once you send money with Zelle to an enrolled recipient you can't cancel it, and that neither Wells Fargo nor Zelle offers purchase protection. You are protected if someone else got into your account and sent the payment. If you were tricked by someone pretending to be a bank or official, Wells Fargo says qualifying impostor scams may be reimbursed, so report it on 1-800-956-4442. ## Your deadlines

- **Credit card billing errors** (Fair Credit Billing Act): dispute within ** 60 days** of the statement showing the charge. The issuer must acknowledge within 30 days and resolve it within two billing cycles, no more than 90 days.
- **Debit card or account fraud** (Regulation E): report fast. Your liability can be capped at $50 if you report a lost card within 2 business days, and grows the longer you wait. Wells Fargo's Zero Liability covers promptly reported unauthorized card purchases.
- **Card network chargeback limits** are often around 120 days. [Chargeback time limits](https://disputekits.com/chargeback-time-limits).
