# How to dispute a charge on Apple Pay

Apple Pay is just a way of paying with a card in your Wallet. Apple doesn't decide disputes; the bank behind that card does. So the first step is working out which card or account paid.

## 1. Find which card paid

Open the Wallet app, tap the card you think was used, and find the transaction. Check the merchant name: many "unknown" charges are real purchases shown under a company's legal name. If it's genuinely wrong, follow the path for that card.

## 2. Dispute it with the right place

| Paid with | Where to dispute |
| --- | --- |
| A bank debit or credit card | Your bank: its app, website or the number on the back of the card. Say the payment was made with Apple Pay and give the merchant, date and amount. |
| Apple Card | In Wallet: tap the transaction, choose **"I need help with this transaction"**, and follow the Messages chat to submit the dispute. |
| Apple Cash | If it's still pending, cancel it in Wallet. If it's completed, ask a known recipient to send it back, or contact Apple Cash support if it was unauthorised. Money you sent on purpose generally can't be disputed. |

## 3. Don't miss the deadline

- **US credit cards:** under the Fair Credit Billing Act, send your dispute within ** 60 days** of the statement that first showed the charge.
- **Debit cards:** report unauthorised charges as fast as you can; the longer you wait, the more of the loss you can be liable for.
- Card network rules often allow longer for some reasons, such as goods that never arrived, but don't count on it.

## 4. Try the merchant first, when it's safe

For a wrong amount, a cancelled order or something that didn't arrive, contacting the merchant first is often faster and is something banks like to see. Keep a copy of your messages. For a charge you didn't make at all, go straight to your bank and ask them to replace the card.

## What to include in a dispute

- The merchant, date, amount and reason (not received, not as described, cancelled, charged twice, or not authorised).
- Your order confirmation, tracking, photos, and messages with the merchant.
- For a cancelled subscription, proof of when you cancelled.
