# UK chargeback: deadline checker for debit and credit cards

Paid by card and the seller won't refund you? You can ask your bank for a chargeback on a debit or credit card, and on a credit card you may also have a Section 75 claim. Enter your dates to see how long you have for each.

## Chargeback or Section 75?

| | Chargeback | Section 75 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cards | Any Visa, Mastercard or Amex debit, credit or prepaid card | Credit cards only |
| Amount | Any amount | One item or service priced over £100 and up to £30,000 (you can have paid only part of it on the card) |
| Time limit | Usually 120 days from paying, or from when it was due | 6 years from the problem (5 in Scotland) |
| Is it a legal right? | No. It's a card scheme rule the bank chooses to use, but the ombudsman expects banks to try when it has a fair chance. | Yes. The card company is jointly liable with the seller. |

Ask for both if you can. Section 75 doesn't work if you paid through PayPal, Klarna or another middleman, because the payment didn't go straight to the seller; a chargeback might still work.

## How to ask

- Write to the seller first and keep their reply (or the silence). Banks ask what you've already tried.
- Contact your bank in its app or by phone, and say "I want to raise a chargeback" (and "a Section 75 claim" for a credit card). Give dates, the amount and your evidence.
- If the bank refuses or doesn't answer within 8 weeks, complain to the [Financial Ombudsman Service](https://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/). It's free, and you have 6 months from the bank's final response.
