# Chargeback fees by processor

A chargeback costs you the sale, the product, the shipping, and on most platforms a fee on top. Here's what the main processors charge US merchants, and when it's worth fighting.

## The real cost of a lost chargeback

- The sale amount, taken back from your balance.
- The goods and shipping, usually not recovered.
- The processing fee on the original sale, which most processors don't refund.
- The chargeback fee.
- Your dispute ratio: too many disputes put you into card network monitoring programmes, with fines and possibly a frozen account.

## Fight or accept?

- **Fight** when you have proof: delivery tracking for "not received", your listing and photos for "not as described", or matching IP, device and order history for fraud claims ([Visa CE 3.0](https://disputekits.com/visa-compelling-evidence-3) can reverse those outright).
- **Accept** small disputes with no evidence, especially on Stripe, where submitting evidence adds a second $15 you only get back if you win.
- **Prevent** the next one: clear billing descriptors, tracking on every order, fast refunds when a customer asks first.
